Jan. 9: officially released pitcher Bob Feller, who'd announced retirement after the '56 season.
March 31: sent pitchers Ed Gasque and Pete Mesa to San Diego.
April 15: sold outfielder Dave Pope to San Diego and optioned pitchers Hank Aguirre and Bud Daley there.
April 16: released outfielder Sam Mele.
(On May 7, pitcher Herb Score was struck by a ball during a game with the New York Yankees. The injury was to have considerable effect on Cleveland baseball).
About May 10, 1957: brought up pitcher Bud Daley from San Diego.
May 15: sold outfielder Bob Usher to Senators.
May 15: optioned first baseman Preston Ward to San Diego Padres of PCL.
May 20: sold pitcher Art Houtteman to Orioles.
May 20: signed first baseman Eddie Robinson, who'd been released by Tigers.
June 13: traded outfielder Jim Busby to Orioles for outfielder Dick Williams.
June 19: sold infielder Bobby Young from San Diego roster to Phillies, who sent him to Miami.
June 29: released first baseman Eddie Robinson; he signed with Orioles as a coach.
July: promoted first baseman Joe Altobelli from Columbus to understudy Vic Wertz.
July 30: recalled outfielder Joe Caffie, batting leader of International League; designated catcher Dick Brown to be sent down..
Aug. 24: bought pitcher Vito Valentinetti from Cubs organization; he was on roster of Cubs' AAA farm in Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast League.
Sept. 21: bought pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm from Cardinals.
Sept. 29: fired Kerby Farrell as manager and named Bobby Bragan to succeed him.
Oct. 16: fired Hank Greenberg as general manager.
Nov. 12: named Frank Lane general manager. He'd been GM of Cardinals.
Dec. 2 (Major league draft): drafted outfielder-pitcher Gary Geiger from Omaha. (The Phillies drafted pitcher Johnny Gray from Cleveland's San Diego roster; Gray had pitched briefly for the Indians in '56.)
Dec. 4: traded pitcher Early Wynn and outfielder Al Smith to White Sox for outfielder Minnie Minoso and third baseman Freddy Hatfield.
