This is a 40-page softcover discussion, by John Phillips, of baseball and war, starting with the Revolutionary War. The first war dealt with a some length is the Spanish-American, in which no major leaguers were drafted. Hundreds went in World War I and II, though. The absence of so many players in 1918 forced teams to use pitchers (like Babe Ruth) in the outfield. That season shut down a month early. There's a listing of many 4-Fs in World War II, some quasi-draft dodgers (Shoeless Joe in WWI), some disucssion of quality of play, plus a lengthy discussion about how Organized Baseball tried to shortchange returning veterans in 1946. Several players had to file lawsuits to get what was due them in this shameful and conveniently forgotten controversy. Also box scores and discussions of the 1945 War Fund games are included.
